LIVEopen_in_fullThe two passes carry the Seattle metro area's winter across the Cascades, and they fail differently. Snoqualmie is an interstate at 3,022 feet with room to chain up and lanes to spare; it closes for avalanche control on the slopes above the freeway and for spinouts in heavy snow. Stevens is a two lane highway at 4,061 feet with a ski area on the summit; it slows down faster, chains up earlier, and its closures are more often about the road simply being overwhelmed.
